The athlete’s code for race weekend. Know these before the start line — it is your responsibility to race within them.

General rules

Organiser rights, transition duties, weather contingencies and athlete responsibilities.

  1. The Organisers reserve the right to limit and refuse entries.

  2. The Organisers reserve the right to remove any participant deemed physically incapable of continuing the race.

  3. The Organisers reserve the right to amend the Rules and Regulations without prior notification.

  4. The Organisers reserve the right to amend the race course with prior notice to participants.

  5. Participants are required to place their bicycles at their designated locations in the Transition Area.

  6. Participants in relay categories are responsible for tagging their teammates at the designated relay exchange areas after completing their respective legs.

  7. In the event of inclement weather, the Organisers reserve the right to delay the commencement of the race, shorten the race, modify the course, or make other necessary changes for safety reasons.

  8. Should inclement weather persist after a delay, the Organisers reserve the right to cancel the race without any refund of registration fees.

  9. Prior to race day, in the event of inclement weather, force majeure, or other hazardous conditions, the Organisers reserve the right to reschedule or cancel the race without any refund of registration fees.

  10. While all reasonable care will be taken by the Organisers to safeguard items deposited at the Bag Deposit service, the Organisers shall not be held liable for any missing or damaged items.

  11. Participants are advised not to deposit valuable or fragile items when using the Bag Deposit service.

  12. Littering is strictly prohibited.

  13. It is the participant’s responsibility to know and comply with all rules and regulations of the event.

  14. The Organisers shall not be responsible for any disputes arising from incomplete and/or incorrect entry details provided by participants.

Participant eligibility & registration

Age bands, relay teams, permitted changes, transfers and registration finality.

  1. Participants racing in the Kids Triathlon must be between 7 and 12 years old on 31 December 2026.

  2. Participants racing in the Youth category of Triathlon must be between 12 and 17 years old on 31 December 2026.

  3. Participants racing in the Sprint Triathlon must be 16 years old and above on 31 December 2026 to compete individually.

  4. Participants racing in the Olympic Triathlon must be 18 years old and above on 31 December 2026 to compete individually.

  5. Relay teams may consist of 2 or 3 participants.

  6. Changes to race distance are subject to the applicable event terms and conditions.

  7. Changes to relay team members are subject to the applicable event terms and conditions.

  8. All permitted changes must be made within the timeline specified by the Organisers.

  9. Individual race entries are non-transferable. Any participant found racing under another person’s registration may be subject to disqualification and further action by the Organisers.

  10. Once the registration has been processed, registration fees are non-refundable for participants who subsequently choose not to participate.

Swim rules

Kit requirements, banned aids, support rules and what to do if you need assistance.

  1. Appropriate swimsuits must be worn during the swim leg.

  2. All swimmers must wear the swim caps provided by the Organisers.

  3. Swim goggles and swim buoys may be worn. Fins, paddles, snorkels, or any other swimming aids are not permitted.

  4. Wetsuits are not permitted. Regulation swim skins are permitted.

  5. Support crews are not permitted. Any assistance received during the swim, other than official medical assistance, may result in disqualification.

  6. No persons other than participants and authorised officials are permitted within the designated swimming area.

  7. Swimmers in difficulty must signal for assistance by raising an arm to the escorting boats/canoes. Once assistance is rendered, the participant must retire from the competition.

Cycling rules

Non-drafting distances, helmet rules, road behaviour and stop-and-go penalties.

  1. Bintan Triathlon is a non-drafting race.

  2. Participants must maintain a minimum longitudinal safety distance of 7 metres from the rear wheel of the participant ahead.

  3. Participants must maintain a minimum lateral distance of 2 metres from other participants when riding alongside.

  4. Participants are permitted to enter the 7 metre draft zone for a maximum of 15 seconds when overtaking. After being overtaken, the participant must drop back outside the draft zone before attempting to overtake again.

  5. Drafting is not permitted and may result in a penalty.

  6. Cyclists must keep to the left side of the road and observe all applicable traffic rules at all times.

  7. No bare torso is allowed during the cycling leg.

  8. A participant may run or walk while pushing their bicycle if necessary.

  9. Support vehicles and support crews are not permitted.

  10. Participants are responsible for performing their own bicycle repairs in the event of a breakdown.

  11. Every cyclist must fasten their helmet before removing their bicycle from the bicycle rack and must keep it securely fastened until the bicycle is returned to the allocated position on the bicycle rack after completing the bike leg.

  12. Participants are responsible for ensuring that their bicycle and brakes are in safe and proper working condition.

  13. Wearing headphones or earphones is strictly prohibited during the cycling leg.

  14. Cyclists who are found drafting may receive a Stop and Go penalty without prior warning. For a Stop & Go penalty:

  15. The athlete will be shown a yellow card and instructed to stop at the designated side of the road.

  16. The athlete must come to a complete stop with both feet on the ground before being allowed to continue.

  17. Any athlete who refuses to comply with the Stop & Go penalty will be disqualified.

Running rules

Race numbers, course discipline and what is not allowed on the run.

  1. Runners must wear their race numbers clearly visible at the front of their race apparel at all times.

  2. Support vehicles and pacers are not permitted.

  3. Runners must remain on the designated course throughout the entire route. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

  4. No bare torso is allowed during the running leg.

  5. Wearing headphones or earphones is strictly prohibited during the running leg.

Penalties & disqualification

Violations that may result in penalties or disqualification, and how officials’ decisions apply.

  1. Participants may be penalised or disqualified for violations of the Rules & Regulations, including but not limited to:

  2. Drafting during the cycling leg.

  3. Failure to follow the designated race course.

  4. Receiving unauthorised assistance.

  5. Refusing to comply with instructions from race officials.

  6. Racing under another person’s registration.

  7. Failure to comply with safety requirements.

  8. Any conduct deemed unsafe, unsportsmanlike, or detrimental to the event.

  9. The decision of the Race Officials and Organisers shall apply in accordance with the event’s Rules & Regulations and Technical Regulations.

Water station regulations

Where stations are located, what is provided, litter zones and hydration vest refills.

  1. Water station available on the course and at the Transition Area & Finish Line.

  2. Hydration options: Mineral Water (cups) and Isotonic Drinks are provided at all main stations.

  3. Self-service / anti-littering zone: Grab cups; do not block the station tables.

  4. Discard used cups ONLY within the designated Trash Zones (50m before and after each station).

  5. Penalty: Littering outside designated zones may result in a time penalty or disqualification.

  6. Runners using hydration vests or belts may request refills at designated refill stations.

Safety and hydration guidelines

Pre-race hydration, heat exhaustion, medical support and emergency behaviour on course.

  1. Start hydrating well 24–48 hours before race day. Do not wait until you feel thirsty during the race (Pre-Race Hydration).

  2. If you experience symptoms of heat exhaustion (dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue, or lack of sweating), slow down immediately and head to the nearest Water Station or Medical Post.

  3. Static medical personnel and mobile first-aiders are stationed along the route. Signal any marshal if you or a fellow participant need assistance.

  4. Apply waterproof sunscreen before the race and wear appropriate headwear/sunglasses to protect against heat exposure.

  5. In case of emergency, pull over safely to the side of the track without obstructing other athletes.
